The personnel’s vehicles were also vandalized. The incident reportedly occurred on Monday morning near the barbed-wire border fence, close to gates 174 and 175 near the Ashabari Border Outpost (BOP). It is alleged that the smugglers were attempting to transport illicit goods through the area when they were pursued by personnel from the 49th Battalion who were on duty; the smugglers then launched a sudden attack. Given the gravity of the situation, a large contingent of police and the Tripura State Rifles has been deployed in the area. Upon reaching a checkpoint, they were reportedly subjected to a sudden and violent assault by a group of smugglers. The attackers assaulted the personnel severely, causing serious head injuries. All the injured have been admitted to hospitals.
According to sources, there are indications that some Bangladeshi nationals may have been among the attackers. They were allegedly residing in the Ashabari area and were involved in cross-border smuggling activities. However, these claims have not yet been officially confirmed. Following the incident, additional BSF personnel from the Ashabari Border Outpost (BOP) arrived at the scene, forcing the attackers to flee in different directions.
