Amid the ongoing political controversy regarding demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, a group of 42 retired judges has issued an open letter supporting the SIR.  The former judges stated that while criticizing the Election Commission, the judiciary, and other constitutional bodies is a democratic right, it is inappropriate to label constitutional officials as “thieves,” “puppets,” or “compromised” without proving such allegations in a court of law.

The letter noted that the law empowers the Election Commission to revise the electoral roll. According to the former judges, updating the electoral roll is essential due to large-scale migration and urbanization over a long period. The objective of the SIR is to make the electoral roll more accurate and reliable by identifying the names of deceased persons, duplicate entries, and voters who have relocated.
