Roorkee: Embezzlement of one crore in IIT, Jailed former employee dies

Roorkee/Dehradun: The former employee accused Dheeraj Kumar Upadhyay from Kushinagar Uttar Pradesh, who was in jail for embezzlement of about one crore rupees from IIT Roorkee, died after his health deteriorated. He was arrested a month ago on charges of embezzlement.
Prashant Garg of IIT had reported in Civil Lines Kotwali on 11 December 2020 that the senior assistant clerk had transferred about Rs 1.05 crore to the institute in his 13 personal accounts. The accused Dheeraj Kumar Upadhyay, a native of Paterha police station, Padrauna district, Kushinagar, UP Hall, Banghedi Mahavatpur Roorkee, was arrested on October 26. Since then the accused was lodged in judicial custody in Roorkee sub-jail. Jailor JP Dwivedi told that in the jail, he was made to work in the office itself. He was working in the office on Thursday. After eleven o’clock he talked about having food. After some time he reported pain in left arm and chest.
On this the jail doctor was called. Dr. Nitish Kumar examined and referred him to the civil hospital. The prisoner Dheeraj Kumar was sent to the hospital along with the Chief Pharmacist from the jail ambulance. At one o’clock in the afternoon, information was received that the doctors had declared him brought dead. Information about the matter was given to the Human Rights Commission as well as to the higher officials as well as to the Civil Lines Police.
On information, the wife and daughter of the deceased also reached the hospital. He said that two-three days ago he had come to the jail on Milai, then he was looking healthy.
