Nagaland: historic pride for the state, Nagami recognized as the world’s first registered Mithun breed

- Nagaland’s heritage receives global recognition: Nagami recognized as the world’s first registered Mithun breed
In Nagaland, the Mithun is not just an animal, but a symbol of tradition, culture, and identity. Now, this heritage has received global recognition. Nagami has been recognized as the world’s first registered Mithun breed by the ICAR–National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR). This historic achievement is the result of years of dedicated efforts by scientists at the ICAR–National Research Centre on Mithun, Medziphema, and the local communities. With its strong black body, white “stockings” on its legs, and excellent adaptability to hilly and forest areas, the Nagami Mithun reflects both the nature of Nagaland and its people. It is reared under traditional free-range grazing and community forest management systems. This is not just the registration of a breed, but a global recognition of Nagaland’s cultural heritage, tribal knowledge, and the tradition of living in harmony with nature. CRDT: ICAR
