Muni Ki Reti: While a rally was being held against drug abuse in Rishikesh, people were protesting by placing the body on the road after a young man was murdered due to drug abuse in Muni Ki Reti. What an irony… a family’s light was extinguished. Sunday was a very sad day for Uttarakhand, especially for the Muni Ki Reti Dogi Patti area. The incident occurred on Saturday evening. Ajendra Kandari, a disabled man, was stabbed to death. The accused, Akshay Thakur, works as a barber and has been arrested. On Sunday, people placed Ajendra’s body at the Tapovan Tiraha, demanding justice. Public anger also erupted against the nearby liquor shop. People remained adamant in demanding the closure of the liquor shop. On Saturday, another light was extinguished in Devbhoomi due to alcohol abuse. Public outrage erupted against the liquor shop, with family members demanding justice and a plea to free Devbhoomi from alcohol. In the Munikireti area, a drunken man named Ajay Thakur brutally stabbed Ajendra Kandari, the son of a poor family, to death. Ajendra was physically disabled but lived his life with courage and self-respect. His brutal murder has shocked the entire region. This incident is not just the murder of an individual, but is being called a murder of humanity, as such an act goes against the very spirit of Devbhoomi. Locals say this tragedy is the horrific result of the openly operating liquor shops, which have already devastated many families.
Local citizens, social organizations, and youth have expressed deep anger over this incident. They say that four innocent people have already lost their lives due to alcohol intoxication in the area, but the administration has not taken any concrete action. People have raised the question, “For how long will innocent people be sacrificed to the poison of alcohol in Devbhoomi?” Family members wept, “What harm did our son do to anyone?” Ajendra’s elderly parents are in a state of grief. They say that their son was disabled, but he was making a living through hard work. His murder has taken away the support of their old age. “What harm did our son do to anyone? He just minded his own business,” the father’s broken voice brims with pain. Public Demands: Strict punishment and a ban on liquor contracts. Following this heinous murder, the public has raised three main demands. These are as follows:
- The murderer, Ajay Thakur, should be given the harshest punishment as soon as possible.
- Liquor shops operating in the area should be investigated and closed.
- A strict policy should be formulated to free Devbhoomi from the clutches of drug addiction.
