Unfortunate….stampede during ‘Satsang’ in Hathras..116 killed so far, 18 injured : CM Yogi to visit spot

Hathras :  It wasa really unfortunate incident happened in hathras in Uttar Pradesh.  So far, at least 116 people, including several women, were killed and several others injured in a stampede during a ‘satsang’ in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras on Tuesday. Etah Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rajesh Kumar Singh said the incident took place at a ‘satsang’ (religious gathering) in Pulrai village for which a large number of people had gathered. Aligarh Commissioner Chaitra V said, “116 people have been confirmed dead. 18 people are injured. Treatment of the injured is being ensured in Aligarh district. Preliminary investigation is being carried out…” A senior government official said Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath may visit Hathras on Wednesday.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the stampede. He directed officials to reach the accident site and take relief measures. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each of the deceased in the Hathras stampede incident. The injured will be given Rs 50,000. Officials said several women were among the dead, adding that several injured have been admitted to hospital. A Hindustan Times report said at least 107 people have died in the Hathras stampede incident, however, this has not been officially confirmed yet.

An eyewitness said that while exiting the religious gathering, the attendees of the satsang fell into a drain outside the venue due to the overcrowding. Heartbreaking videos showed the bodies of the women who died in the Hathras stampede lying on the floor of a medical facility. Hathras DM Ashish Kumar said, “…The district administration is working. The injured are being taken to the hospital and people are being treated… Doctors have told me that the death toll is around 50-60 people… The SDM had given permission to organize the event and it was a private event… A high-level committee has been formed to investigate the matter… The priority of the administration is to provide all possible help to the injured and the families of the deceased…”

Aligarh Commissioner Chaitra V said, “116 deaths have been confirmed. 18 people are injured. Treatment of the injured is being ensured in Aligarh district. Preliminary investigation is being done…” Earlier, he had said that the death toll has risen to 87, “The number of injured is 18 and they are out of danger”. Earlier, Hathras District Magistrate Ashish Kumar had said that so far doctors have informed him about 50-60 deaths in the Hathras stampede incident. “The district administration is investigating the matter…Permission to hold the event was given by the SDM and it was a private event…A high-level committee has been formed to investigate the matter…The primary focus of the administration is to provide all possible help to the injured and the families of the deceased…”

Initially, Etah (CMO) Umesh Kumar had said that 27 people had died in the Hathras stampede incident. “27 bodies have arrived at the post-mortem house so far… Many injured have also been admitted. Further details will be revealed after investigation. The primary cause is a stampede during a religious event.”A team of Additional Director General of Police (ADG) Agra and Aligarh Commissioner has been constituted to investigate the cause of the incident. UP CM condoles the incident: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the stampede. He directed officials to reach the accident site and take relief measures. UP Minister Sandeep Singh said that the death toll in the Hathras stampede incident is rising. He said, “We have been instructed by the CM to reach the Hathras incident site and investigate the matter and take necessary decisions on behalf of the government. The death toll is constantly increasing.”Eyewitness Shakuntala said: “After the satsang ended, everyone came out. There was a road outside at a height and there was a drain below. One after the other people started falling into it. Some people were crushed.”

The President of India, while addressing the X, said that the news of the death of devotees including women and children in the accident in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh is heart-wrenching. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was speaking in the Lok Sabha at the time of the incident, expressed his condolences to those who lost their lives in the accident in the House and said that all possible help will be provided to the victims.Reacting to the tragic incident of Hathras stampede, Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajnath Singh said, “The incident that took place in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh is extremely sad. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families of those who lost their loved ones in it. I wish all the injured a speedy recovery. The local administration, under the supervision of the state government, is providing all possible help to all the victims.”Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on microblogging platform Instagram, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. I express my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this accident. May God give them strength to bear this grief. The local administration is engaged in relief work. I wish the injured a speedy recovery.
