Rishikesh: (Manoj Rautela) Plastic waste management is emerging as a challenge in front of our urban life. In such a situation, Rishikesh Municipal Corporation has set an example in front of municipal bodies by managing plastic waste. The Municipal Corporation is not only successfully collecting plastic waste, but is also reusing it in many ways through recycling. Being a major center of rafting-camping along with being a pilgrimage city, Rishikesh is crowded with devotees and tourists throughout the year. For this reason, management of plastic waste is a challenging task here. On the initiative of Municipal Commissioner Shailendra Singh Negi, Rishikesh Municipal Corporation first established plastic banks at ISBT, Triveni Ghat and Virbhadra. Old plastic bottles were used to make boxes for plastic banks. In which people themselves put empty bottles or other plastic waste. So far, about 400 kg of plastic has been recycled from these plastic banks. Seeing the success of this experiment, the Municipal Corporation is now going to establish plastic banks at Natraj, Transit Camp, Railway Station as well.
Waste to Wonder Park-
Rishikesh Municipal Corporation has also prepared a ‘Waste to Wonder’ park from plastic waste in the premises, in which children’s swings and decorative items have been prepared from old tyres, damaged street lights, bicycles and scooters. Along with this, the Municipal Corporation is also preparing benches, tree cards, plastic bank boxes from recycled plastic. All this was done under the supervision of Municipal Commissioner Shailendra Singh Negi. People have a lot of expectations from him. Wherever he goes, he works by maintaining harmony between the common people and the administration. He does not like any kind of laxity in work. His team includes Assistant Municipal Commissioner Ramesh Singh Rawat and Chandrakant Bhatt and other team members.
Women’s groups Added to the campaign-
Despite door-to-door garbage collection in Rishikesh Municipal Corporation, earlier the user charge could be collected only for three lakhs per month, but now the Municipal Corporation has given the work of collecting user charges to women self-help groups (Triveni Sena), after which the collection of the Municipal Corporation has crossed 13 lakhs. Out of this, the Municipal Corporation gives 25 percent dividend to women groups. In this way, about 250 women have got direct employment.
Pushkar Singh Dhami, Chief Minister said, All the bodies have been instructed to make solid arrangements for plastic waste disposal. Many innovative efforts are being made at the level of the bodies in this direction, in some places plastic is also being returned through QR code. The government is also rewarding the bodies doing better work in this direction.
