Lucknow : Local Congress leaders now opposing alliance with Samajwady Party in Uttar Pradesh. Over 250 Congress leaders, including 60 women, have opposed any tie-up with the Samajwadi Party in the Lok Sabha polls. In a party meeting on Tuesday, Congress members objected that the tie-up would harm the party in Uttar Pradesh. To no avail. The meeting, which lasted for more than seven hours, was presided over by UP Congress President Brijlal Khabri. No central leader was present in the meeting. A party leader said that the alliance with the SP will not take the leadership of the Congress forward. An anti-SP voter also becomes anti-Congress.

Instead of helping an alliance, it may harm our electoral prospects. On the other hand, another leader said that the Muslims in Karnataka have reposed their faith in the Congress. In view of this, the party should keep hope. Meanwhile, the state president asked the party workers to be ready to fight against the ruling BJP. Interestingly, Congress’ UP in-charge Priyanka Gandhi did not even send any message for the party meeting. It has been a year since Priyanka visited UP after her defeat in the 2022 assembly elections.

It was Priyanka Gandhi, along with strategist Prashant Kishor, who insisted on an alliance with the SP in the 2017 assembly elections, despite objections expressed by Rahul Gandhi. The coalition proved disastrous and broke up shortly after the election. Now the local Congress leaders do not want to take the risk. Congress leaders oppose alliance with SP in UP
