Notably, earlier this morning, office-bearers of the Dimri Religious Panchayat arrived at the Tehri Royal Palace in Narendra Nagar. There, under the leadership of Maharani Mala Rajya Lakshmi Shah—and joined by her daughter Kshirya Kumari Devi, her granddaughter Ahana (Maharani Rajya Lakshmi Shah’s maternal granddaughter), and other married women—the sesame seeds were ceremonially pressed to extract the oil, and the sacred oil pitcher was subsequently handed over to the Shri Badrinath Dimri Religious Central Panchayat. Furthermore, today—Tuesday, April 7—Maharaja Manujayendra Shah formally flagged off the Shri Badrinath ‘Gadu Ghada’ Oil Pitcher procession from the Royal Palace in Narendra Nagar. It is with this very sesame oil that Lord Badri Vishal is anointed during the ceremonial opening of the temple portals.

oppo_1026

—————————————

“Great care must be taken to maintain purity in this ritual; it is a private form of worship—an ancient tradition—and people need to understand this.” — Maharani Mala Rajya Lakshmi Shah

“This is a private tradition; therefore, we do not allow everyone to attend, so as to ensure that the rituals and procedures remain undisturbed. God does not desire any disruption. He sees everything and understands everything. We must exercise particular care regarding purity during this process… People need to understand that this is not a public fair or festival; it is a worship ceremony belonging to our family—a worship of God, Shree Badri Vishal Bhagwan. Even a slight lapse in the proceedings is considered inauspicious. It is a very ancient tradition… ultimately, it is an act of devotion to God. The sunlight was somewhat scarce this morning, but we have faith in God. Now, however, the sun has come out, and the oil is flowing well. The oil extracts best under sunlight. Everything has its appointed time, and we must perform our duties in accordance with that schedule. People sometimes feel that they are being barred from attending; however, discipline is essential to ensure that no disruptions arise during the sacred rituals. The women involved put in such immense effort; our intention is simply to ensure that their hard work does not go in vain. It is an endeavor driven by love and devotion toward God, and everything is carried out in that spirit.”

—————————————

“I took leave from school to be here, and I am striving to follow the instructions given by my elders.” — Ahana

Ahana, Maharani-ji’s granddaughter and a school student, was also present on this auspicious day. It is she who will eventually carry this tradition forward in the future. Her mother, Kshirya Kumari Devi, was also by her side. Ahana remarked, “I am trying my best to do exactly as my grandmother has instructed. I am currently in the 11th grade; I arrived here right after completing my 10th-grade examinations. This marks my third year participating in this ritual. It has been a wonderful experience so far. I am learning the ropes from the elderly women here. The process of extracting the oil is a bit tricky… I am simply observing how it is done and attempting to replicate it. With practice, I am sure I will master it. The overall experience has been truly enriching.” It is noteworthy that Ahana was seen diligently engaged in upholding this tradition, displaying a deep sense of devotion despite her tender age. She was extracting the oil with great effort, while her grandmother and mother guided and instructed her. Witnessing the next generation uphold a tradition in this manner was truly delightful, as this custom holds immense significance for millions of devotees and pilgrims; it is something to which they are deeply emotionally attached.

Dr. Harish Gaur, Media In-charge for the Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee, announced that tomorrow—Wednesday, April 8—devotees will have the opportunity to seek *darshan* (sacred viewing) of the *Gadu Ghada* (Oil Pitcher) at the Temple Committee’s Chela Chetram Dharamshala, located on Railway Road.
