The Prime Minister arrived at the Martyrs Memorial after offering prayers at the Aughadnath Temple here and paid homage to the martyrs who laid down their lives for the country. Modi along with Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath offered prayers and circumambulated the temple. Located in Meerut Cantonment, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Indian soldiers were called Kali Paltan during the British rule. Indian soldiers used to live around this temple and due to this the temple came to be called as Kali Paltan Temple.
It is said that during the British rule Indian soldiers used to come to the Aughadnath temple to drink water, but the priests of the temple opposed the Indian soldiers drinking water from the well in the temple, as the cartridges they used contained them. Cow fat was found. After this, the flames of rebellion broke out among the Indian soldiers against the British rule from here and the revolution of 1857 started. The Prime Minister reached Meerut by road instead of by air due to bad weather.
