New Delhi: Jagdeep Dhankhar will be the next Vice President of the country. Dhankhar won the Vice-President’s election by defeating Margaret Alva, the joint candidate of the opposition parties, by a huge margin. Announcing the results, the Returning Officer for the Vice-President’s election and Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh said that out of 780 MPs of both the Houses, 92.94 percent of the MPs exercised their franchise. He said that out of 725 MPs who voted in the Vice Presidential election, 15 votes were found invalid.
Singh said that out of 710 valid votes cast for the election of Vice-President, Jagdeep Dhankhar got the vote of 528 MPs while 182 MPs cast their vote in favor of Margaret Alva. To win the election it was necessary to get 356 votes but Dhankhar got more first preference votes, 528 and thus NDA candidate Dhankhar defeated the combined candidate of opposition parties by a huge margin.
Giving information about the entire process of the Vice Presidential election, Utpal Kumar Singh said that 50 nomination papers were received for the Vice Presidential election, out of which the nomination papers of Jagdeep Dhankhar and Margaret Alva were found correct. Voting for the election of the next Vice President of the country was held in the Parliament House from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday. After the voting process was over, the ballot box was sealed. Counting started at 6 pm in which Dhankhar won the election by securing 528 votes. The total number of members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha is 788 but due to 8 seats vacant in Rajya Sabha, the total number of MPs who voted in the Vice Presidential election this time was 780.
The Trinamool Congress, which has a total of 36 MPs in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, had announced not to vote in the Vice Presidential elections, but it is being told that two MPs of Mamata Banerjee’s party, bypassing the party’s instructions, came to the Parliament House on Saturday.
