BBC Journalist Mark Tully has passed away in New Delhi
New Delhi :The end of an era in journalism…! Sir Mark Tully, the BBC journalist known for his accurate and impartial reporting during the Emergency and Operation Blue Star, has passed away after a long illness. He dies in Max Hospital, Saket. He was part of a powerful trio with Satish Jacob and Rehan Fazal. Goodbye, Sir Mark.
He not only observed India, but understood it deeply and presented its true picture to the world. His writing possessed a remarkable balance of truth, empathy, and impartiality. His insights into Indian society, politics, and culture will always remain inspiring. Despite being a foreigner, he considered India his home and became its voice. This is an irreparable loss for the world of journalism and for India. We offer him our heartfelt condolences.
Veteran Journalist Mark Tully was household name and tall journalist. During the Indo-Pak war and the Emergency, his reports were eagerly awaited. Another prominent name at the BBC was Ratnakar Bharatiya; millions of Indians listened to him on the BBC. We met after Operation Blue Star at the Golden Temple in Amritsar in June 1984. We were the only three guests at the Amritsar International Hotel that day! Aarti and I had gone to understand the suffering of blood-soaked Punjab, and Mark was in another room, so we went to meet him. In-depth understanding, observation, and analysis of every event were hallmarks of his journalism. We went to the wounded Golden Temple alone, but I had the opportunity to travel to other places in Punjab with Mark Tully. His journalism will be remembered.
