Amritsar : Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami appointed as new President of SGPC

Amritsar : Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami is now the new president of SGPC. Honorary Chief Secretary of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) Harjinder Singh Dhami was on Monday declared president of the apex Sikh religious organization. Dhami has replaced Bibi Jagir Kaur. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has fielded Kaur as its candidate from Bholath assembly seat in Kapurthala district. Dhami, a close aide of the Badal family, is a member of the SGPC from Shyam Chaurasi block of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab.
During the annual general body meeting of SGPC at Teja Singh Samudri Hall in Amritsar, the organization’s senior vice president Surjit Singh Bhittewad and other member Harvinder Singh Khalsa proposed Dhami’s name for the post of president. At the same time, some members of the opposition camp raised the demand for secret ballot, raising objections.
The opposition camp proposed Mittu Singh’s name for the post of SGPC president. Later Dhami got 122 votes while Singh got 19 votes.
