Aamir Tanba, the prisoner who killed Sarabjit Singh in Lahore jail, shot dead

New Delhi :  On Sunday, unidentified gunmen killed Aamir Tanba, who was responsible for the killing of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail in 2013. Amir Tanba was standing outside his home in Islampura, Lahore, when at least two unidentified gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire, seriously injuring him.

The murder of Sarabjit Singh’s killer Aamir Tanba is being seen as a revenge killing by hired killers. According to local residents, Aamir was seriously injured by the bullet and died before he could be taken to the hospital. Local people also claimed that Aamir was receiving death threats for the last few days. Aamir, along with his fellow prisoner Mudasir Munir, was accused of attacking Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh in April 2013.

It was told that both the prisoners tortured and killed Sarabjit Singh in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail. But on 15 December 2013, after all the witnesses of the murder turned hostile, the court acquitted both Aamir and Munir, due to which the accused were released. Aamir and Munir, prisoners of Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail, attacked Sarabjit and tortured him to death. Sarabjit suffered serious head injuries due to torture with blunt objects and bricks. He was brought to Jinnah Hospital in Lahore and kept in the intensive care unit (ICU) for at least five days.

Sarabjit Singh was later declared ‘dead’ by a senior neurosurgeon’s medical board. Other reports also indicate that Sarabjit Singh died on the way from jail to hospital on the very first day of his torture by the captors and The matter was further dragged on to cover up the real incident. Sarabjit Singh was convicted of terrorism and espionage by the Supreme Court of Pakistan for his involvement in the serial bomb blasts in Lahore and Faisalabad during the 1990s. The Lahore High Court first sentenced him to death, while an appeal in the apex court was later rejected and the death sentence was upheld in 1991.
