New Delhi:  Senior Congress leader and former Punjab unit chief Sunil Jakhar has joined rival BJP days after quitting the old party. Jakhar is in Delhi and has already met BJP President JP Nadda. Jakhar was recently issued a show cause notice by the Congress for criticizing former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

Jakhar is a prominent non-Sikh face of Punjab and is respected across party lines. He dominates many disgruntled Congress leaders. Jakhar is the BJP’s second major ‘catch’ after Captain Amarinder Singh forged an alliance with the BJP. In a dramatic public resignation, when the party was holding a three-day brainstorming session in Rajasthan, Jakhar had said “goodbye and best wishes, Congress” in a Facebook Live video. He also did not respond to the show cause notice issued by the party. Last month, the Congress disciplinary panel had recommended that Jakhar be suspended from the party for two years and removed from all posts.

The five-member committee is headed by senior party leader AK Antony. Apart from Shri Antony, members Tariq Anwar, JP Agrawal and G Parameshwara also participated in the meeting on what action should be taken. Ambika Soni, who appeared as a staunch opponent of Jakhar, was also not present during the meeting.
