Delhi: Famous Kathak Dancer Pandit Birju Maharaj passed away. He has died due to heart failure. He breathed his last at the age of 83. His family members have given this information.

Vibhushan awardee Birju Maharaj breathed his last at Delhi’s Saket Hospital on the intervening night of Sunday-Monday. Birju Maharaj was a dancer as well as a classical singer. Birju Maharaj’s real name was Brijmohan Mishra. He was born on February 4, 1938 in Lucknow. Swaransh Mishra, the grandson of Birju Maharaj, who belongs to the Lucknow gharana, gave information about this through a social media post. He breathed his last at Delhi’s Saket Hospital. Birju Maharaj had also choreographed for some Hindi films, films like Devdas, Dedh Ishqiya, Umrao Jaan and Baji Rao Mastani are some of them.

Birju Maharaj was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in the year 1983. Apart from this, he has also choreographed dance in many Bollywood films, which include films like ‘Umrao Jaan’, ‘Dedh Ishqiya’, ‘Bajirao Mastani’. Apart from Padma Vibhushan, he has also been awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Kalidas Samman. In 2012, she was awarded the National Film Award for Dance Choreography in the film ‘Vishwaroopam’.
