Delhi: Election Commission seized Rs 771.25 crore, narcotics and gifts till February 14

New Delhi: The Election Commission has said that it has seized cash, narcotics, liquor, precious metals and freebies worth Rs 771.25 crore till February 14 during the ongoing assembly elections in five states. According to Election Commission officials, a record seizure of Rs 224.71 crore has already been achieved in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Goa from the date of notification of the election on January 8 till the day of the second phase of polling.

The seizure, which includes cash, liquor, narcotics, gifts, etc., was higher than the total seizure of Rs 203.78 crore in the entire general election of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Goa assembly elections in all phases of 2017. The poll panel said that officials engaged in election duty in five states seized Rs 12.73 crore in Goa, Rs 98.42 crore in Manipur, Rs 448.12 crore in Punjab, Rs 18.81 in cash, liquor, narcotics, precious metals and gifts. Till February 14, 2022, Rs 193.17 crore were seized in Uttarakhand and Rs 193.17 crore in Uttar Pradesh.

Election Commission officials said a total of Rs 6.66 crore in cash, 95,446 liters of liquor worth Rs 3.57 crore, 43.55 kg of narcotics worth Rs 1.28 crore and Rs 1.20 crore were seized by state election officials in Goa, while Rs 1.5 crore in Manipur cash , 39,893 liters of liquor worth Rs 51 lakh, 76 kg of narcotic substances worth Rs 82.15 crore, 15.83 kg of precious metals worth Rs 7.71 crore and Rs 6.55 crore were seized.

Similarly in Punjab, commission officials seized Rs 30.43 crore in cash, 49,58,081 liters of liquor worth Rs 29.89 crore, 4616.15 kg of narcotics worth Rs 325.27 crore, 143.12 kg of precious metals worth Rs 59.68 crore and free articles worth Rs 2.85 crore.  In Uttar Pradesh, cash worth Rs 78.11 crore, 16,29,880 liters of liquor worth Rs 44.32 crore, 13,958 kg of narcotic substances worth Rs 38.05 crore, 303.75 kg of precious metal worth Rs 30.91 crore and gifts worth Rs 1.78 crore have been seized in Uttar Pradesh.

The commission is giving special emphasis on inducement free elections and to prevent undue money power, liquor, free of cost and provide cash, liquor, drugs to 2400 Flying Squads (FS) and 2654 Static Surveillance Teams (SSTs) in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Goa. And was engaged in checking the movement of gift material.
