Chandigarh : Former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has passed away. Parkash Singh Badal was hospitalized for several days. Badal was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Mohali. Parkash Singh Badal was also kept in the intensive care unit of a private hospital on Monday, where doctors were closely monitoring his health. The senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Mohali a week ago after he complained of breathing problems.

Badal was active in Indian politics since 1947, country’s oldest Chief Minister, prominent face of BJP-Akali Dal in Punjab Parkash Singh Badal is the only leader who became the Chief Minister of Punjab five times. He is given the status of a very respectable senior person in the politics of Punjab. In a medical bulletin issued on Monday evening, the private hospital had said, Parkash Singh Badal is still under close observation of doctors in the ICU. However, hospital sources had said that there was a slight improvement in the health of Badal (95). He had also said that if there was a gradual improvement in the health of the senior SAD leader over the next few days, he could be shifted to a private ward.

Akali leader of Punjab Parkash Singh Badal was born on December 8, 1927 in Abul Khurana village (now in Pakistan) in a Jat Sikh family. He got education at the Christian College of Lahore. Parkash Singh Badal’s wife Surinder Kaur has passed away. They have a son and a daughter. His daughter is married to the son of former Punjab Chief Minister Pratap Singh Kairon. Harsimrat Kaur Badal is the daughter-in-law of Parkash Singh Badal. She has been the Minister of Food Processing Industries. She was elected as the Member of Parliament for the 15th and 16th Lok Sabha consecutively from the year 2009 from Bhatinda Lok Sabha constituency. She is also a member of Shiromani Akali Dal. Parkash Singh Badal’s son Sukhbir Singh Badal has also been the Deputy CM of Punjab and President of Shiromani Akali Dal. Sukhbir Singh was continuously victorious from Faridkot in the 11th and 12th Lok Sabha. He was the Union Minister of State between 1998 and 1999, besides being a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2001 to 2004. In January 2008, he was declared the President of the Akali Dal. He also won the 2012 assembly.

In 1947, Parkash Singh Badal became a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal. He is given the status of a highly respected senior figure in Punjab politics. In 1961, Parkash Singh Badal was included in the cabinet. In 1957 and 1969 he was elected MLA on Congress ticket. Parkash Singh Badal became the Chief Minister in 1970–1971, but later he had to give up the post of Chief Minister and he was elected to the Lok Sabha and became the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation at the Center. In 1977, Badal again got the opportunity to become the Chief Minister of Punjab.

He served as the Executive Minister in the Ministries related to Community Development, Panchayati Raj, Animal Husbandry, Dairy etc. from the year 1969-1970. He has spent almost seventeen years of his life in jail for defending Punjab, Punjabiyat and Punjabis and raising voice for their interests. He has also been raising his voice against corruption. Parkash Singh Badal has been the Chief Minister of Punjab in 1977–1980, 1997–2002 and Leader of the Opposition in 1972, 1980 and 2002. He also became a Member of Parliament during the reign of Morarji Desai. He was entrusted with the responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation as a Union Minister.
